I support the proposed Everglades to Gulf Conservation Area proposed to protect environmentally sensitive lands in Southwest Florida.

- This proposal identifies a four-million-acre envelope for which conservation easements or fee-title acquisition from willing participants would focus protection of critical lands and waters in the heart of Southwest Florida.
 
- With the rate of development depleting at least 100,000 acres a year of Florida's important habitat, agricultural working lands, and wetlands, we know that this pace of land protection must continue if we want to safeguard our Florida environment.

- The US Fish and Wildlife Service's Everglades to Gulf Conservation Area proposal would help protect and restore essential habitats for over 100 federal and state-listed species, including the crested caracara, Florida bonneted bat, and the Florida panther.

- I also support the proposal because it would help to preserve the Greater Everglades ecosystem, including ranching and agricultural lands that serve as wildlife habitat, as well as protect water resources particularly watersheds between the Peace River, the Caloosahatchee River, and Corkscrew Swamp.
 
- Florida's human population will reach around 34 million people by 2070. In the Conservancy's focal 5-county area, we will add another 1.1 million people by then essentially doubling our current population.

- Our cherished public and preserved lands benefit endangered species, aquifer recharge and water quality needs, and recreation. At this time when we are facing extreme development pressure, this effort is needed to balance against habitat loss and fragmentation, and ailing water quality.

- The Everglades to Gulf prospect will help protect the vital Florida Wildlife Corridor which supports a myriad of flora and fauna, and in particular the endangered Florida panther.

- To ensure that funding is used most strategically, we hope the agency will focus on environmentally sensitive lands that are also highly vulnerable to development or intensification as top priorities. Lands that are already effectively protected should not receive consideration.

Please move forward with establishing the Everglades to Gulf Conservation Area for the future of Southwest Florida's water, land, and wildlife.
